Extended warranties are usually very inexpensive and can save you thousands in the future. It's simple and inexpensive to purchase extended warranties and one of the smartest ways to protect your investment.

can be large, heavy and expensive. You probably don't have the special tools or expertise needed to fix them in a crisis. If you can spare a few thousand dollars without batting an eyelash for new should they break tomorrow, don't buy a warranty. Corroded: Leaves Black Smears

L. Martin 5/18/2017

Like other reviewer's, my Tilt-Head 6-Wire Whip corroded and the metal piece that attaches to the mixer is covered with a fine, black dust/film that comes off on my hands and sponges. It washes right off, but comes back again because the coating that protects the finish is gone. I cannot remember putting it in the dishwasher, but the customer service rep let me know that this can happen if you let it sit in water too long. The only remedy seems to be hand washing it immediately after use, but now I'm afraid to even use dish soap on the new one I had to buy. I wish Kitchenaid would correct this problem and use different materials, but it appears that this is one thing they just don't care to fix. COME ON, KITCHENAID! FIX THIS!

Corrodes in the dishwasher

James 4/22/2017

Corrodes in the dishwasher and leaves dark gray smears on your hands, dishtowels, and in your food. Find a stainless steel version if you can, and let me know what it is.

How is my mom's pea-green mixer circa 1958 better than mine?

BummedBaker 4/1/2017

The KitchenAid stand mixer is the industry standard. It's often one of the first things added to wedding and shower registries; it was one of the first things I registered for. I was so excited when I opened mine! But when I started to use it-- and wash it-- specifically the wire whip attachment-- the same thing happened to mine that happened to everyone else's-- black gunk that gets everywhere appeared. No matter how many times I washed it off, it just came back. I tried different solvents, all to no avail. Finally, I returned my first mixer because I thought it was just a fluke, a random manufacturer defect....but then the exact same thing happened with my next one. I can't believe KitchenAid would risk their reputation and market edge for the sake of something so small. Using aluminum for the attachment casting devalues the entire product and makes me wonder what other corners they have cut in recent years. How much money can they be saving by using this inferior material?!? My mom's mixer and all its original parts are still going strong after 50+ years and who knows how many cakes; how come I am having serious problems almost immediately?-- health and safety risks, not to mention that the black stuff ruins whatever you're trying to make! If the whole wire whip attachment were made of all stainless steel-- as it used to be-- it would entirely fix the problem and restore my KitchenAid's place in my kitchen as one of my essential go-to appliances. As it stands, however, it's just collecting dust in the corner.

Black gunk

Wire Whip made of aluminum and stainless steel will corrode

GeothermalSusan 2/21/2017

The wire whip that came with my beautiful new tilt head grape colored mixer is made of an aluminum body with stainless steel wires. Haven't your engineers every heard of galvanic corrosion? The aluminum will oxidize if you put this in contact with any conductive solution: Lemon juice, dishwasher soap, dish washing detergent, vinegar. Bad engineering! The oxidation forms an icky black powder that covers everything and gets in the food in the mixer if it gets wet. Eventually the wires will come out of the body as the corrosion continues. I tried coating mine with clear nail polish, but then it wouldn't fit on the head anymore. Make it all stainless.

Black residue everywhere - a mess!

Britton 2/4/2017

The top portion of my wire whisk has just left black residue all over my hands, in my frosting and on my towel. It's a mess. Evidently someone (guest, babysitter) put my whisk into the dishwasher unbeknownst to me. I cannot tell you how annoyed I am. I have used a kitchenaid stand mixer for years - my mother's (purchased probably 35-40 years ago) has never had this problem and her whisk has always been dishwasher friendly. Why in the world in this day and age any company would manufacture a product that could not be put in the dishwasher is beyond me. Other stand mixers that I know of do not have this issue. This should certainly have been stainless steel or some other non-oxidizing metal. Is there an alternate whisk available that I can use that doesn't have this issue? In looking at the reviews for this piece, I see that I am far from the only person who had a problem.

Black gunk, possibly very dangerous

Jeff michels 1/14/2017

The black gunk that comes off the hub of this attachment drips into the mixture if it gets wet. Can't figure out what it is, not rust or anything else clearly harmless. Given that the KitchenAid attachments are made oversea there's some real concern as to what this is leaching out of the metal. Black substance appears whether you hand or machine wash. Have bought 2 to confirm

Wire Whip Attachment Leaves a lot to be desired

Baker Blues 12/15/2016

I am with ALL of the others who have had issues with this attachment. I can see that the breaking prongs is an issue for a lot of people and I HAVE sent an email to Corporate with my discontent about this accessory. I'm on my 4th replacement of this part and the cost has doubled since the first replacement. Very disappointed in this part and when I go to purchase a new mixer in another year, I'll go with another manufacturer and possibly just spend more on a commercial version as I'm adding to my cost every 6 months with this mixer anyway. Wake up KitchenAid...your customers are not happy.

Black Residue

MM 12/8/2016

I am on this website for the same reason as all the other commenters. I put my wisk into the machine and it turned black and started rubbing off a thick black residue. I figured it was a reaction to the detergent and my fault for not hand-washing it. So, I tossed it and came here to buy a new one. But, now I see that everyone has the same problem regardless of how they wash it. What am I supposed to do now?

Residue from beater

Emmy 11/5/2016

This beater is very dangerous in my eyes!!! No beater should not be able to withstand a disheasher. Even hand washing only it has a major problem. This metal substance drips Into to food while the mixer is spinning. It looks like aluminum but could be lead... this is a poison in my book. I have been working In a hospital kitchen for many years and never experienced anything so disgusting like this beater I have at home. I have my mixer for 35 years and my original beater snapped... but the metal on it was fine.. no metal issues existed with my old beater. This is a cheap move that kitchen aid made. I am about ready for a new mixer but if this Is what I will get fir $300... it wont be a kitchen aid I will be buying.

broken wire

Jael 8/25/2016

I don't know what is the lifespan of this whisk attachment. I have had it for a couple of years now, but just now, the wire on the whisk just snapped off. two of them to be exact. It also rubbed off some kind of black substace. I am looking for a replacement but seeing the reviews, i am honestly discouraged.

Review feedback

Frustrated 7/22/2016

Same issue with the residue, but it would be SO MUCH MORE HELPFUL if corporate feedback would reply with more than just a thanks and please email us. This does absolutely nothing to help the rest of us who have the same issue, are considering buying, asking about a newer model/improved model, etc.

not sure this is safe...

southernapple 7/12/2016

I have had my mixer for a while and LOVE it. However, I have had to stop using it with this attachment, and I used this attachment for so many things. The silver plating has worn off (and I have only ever hand washed it). If the connecting piece touches anything, a dark gray/black charcoal looking residue rubs off onto it. This can't be good!

Black Residue and Cracked

bmkiss67 7/4/2016

The mixer is 6 months old, Christmas gift, and this is the first time we used the wire whisk. All we did is use it to make whip cream. The connector of the whisk, where it connecters to the mixer, has a lot of black residue and it has a crack in it right along the top rim. Would love to start using it more often but worried that it will end up in pieces in the bowl while being used. Is there going to be a better model of this whisk coming out soon?

Black Residue

TMS 6/14/2016

I am in agreement with other reviews regarding the black substance that comes off. I love the function of the whisk but the black residue is annoying. I've had my mixer for less than 6 months and want to purchase an additional whisk to expedite my process but I don't want to deal with the black residue. Is there a solution?

Tough decision ...

lovetobake 5/16/2016

Metallic substance rubs off from the part of the whip (aluminum) which attaches to the mixer. The wires are stainless steel though so are fine. I see the newer models are all stainless steel & really want that. But now I'm caught with a tough decision...buy a new whip which will eventually have metallic substance rub off or just buy a newer model when I spent hundreds to buy my current mixer??

my wire whip was great until it broke

julie the baker 4/25/2016

I have used my for a few years... it's always done great until last friday when one of the wires broke and can only be welded back together... I was just told that KitchenAid only warranties the mixer and parts for one year. I thought it would last a longer time than it has.. sad.

Very disappointed

Marybelle 4/25/2016

Got the stand mixer for my wedding 6 months ago, Made too much noice when I used the wire whip, within a few uses the wire came out and it was a hustle to put it back just for it to come right out as soon as I used it again. Purchased a replacement after a few months since I Didn't get a gift receipt and didn't know where it was purchased. Once again the wire is out and I can't use my great mixer again! What happened to the old whips they used to make my grandma's lasted her a lifetime. Very disappointed because I love my mixer.

comes with set, good for occasional use

Beckie 4/16/2016

This comes with the original set. Within a few weeks of occasional use, the plating on the top had come off and was rubbing nasty black stuff on my fingers. Now after having had it for just over a year, two of the prongs are bent making a loud noise / scraping the metal bowl.

expected it to last longer

Joe Cook 3/29/2016

I had the same issue the previous reviewer stated. The six wire whip came with the mixer that I have only had for 3 months. One of the wires came loose from the hole and will not go back in. I would expect it to have lasted longer. Maybe it is still covered under warranty.

achilles heel

chef 3/23/2016

This attachment came with my mixer when I bought it years ago. I used it one time in a cookie dough and it cane apart. One of the "wisks" popped out of it's hole and can only be welded back in order for it to be fixed again. I consider that an achilles heel for it, so I guess you can only use it on cream or egg whites or something light like that. I had to spend another $20.00 for a new one.
